How Can We Prevent Skin Aging?

Anyone can distinguish between young skin and mature skin. But what are the differences between the skin of a young person and that of an older person? In this article, we explain it in detail, so continue reading!

Firstly, in order to understand why our skin ages, it is vital to know the basics of the skin.

What does the skin consist of?

The skin consists of three layers, and these are:

Epidermis

The epidermis is the skin’s surface, rich in keratin, that is water-resistant and tough. Dead skin cells are shed in the epidermis, and melanin is also found here (responsible for producing the color of our skin).

Dermis

The second layer is the dermis, composed of blood vessels, fat, nerves, elastin, and collagen fibers. The collagen fibers and elastin provide the skin with elasticity.

Subcutaneous tissue

This is the skin’s deepest layer, mostly made of fat and connective tissue.

Young skin

Young skin is not very sensitive to external environmental influences. Furthermore, it is very elastic and resistant. Young skin cells can regenerate quickly and store a lot of moisture.

The external features of the skin are often clearly visible. But what are the internal components that impact the skin’s appearance?

One key factor is collagen. The protein collagen makes up 70% of our dermis, the middle layer of the skin. In particular, collagen contributes to the elasticity and strength of our dermis.

Collagen fibers have high tensile strength and are not stretchable. Thus, the protein has a structure-forming effect on the body and gives elasticity to the skin. The collagen fibers are embedded in a gel-like base substance that has a very high moisture-binding capacity, which helps the skin to maintain its volume.

However, with age, our body becomes less efficient at producing collagen and replenishing cells in the skin. Experts have found that from the mid-20s, a person produces about 1% less collagen each year

Consequently, the body’s own collagen is consumed faster than new collagen can be supplied, which causes our skin to lose elasticity. This can explain the aging of the skin.

Old skin

The old skin is drier and rougher, age spots appear, and wrinkles are formed. The loss of volume shows up in the skin’s appearance as sagging skin. Lastly, the loss of density results in the skin losing its radiant appearance.

Less collagen in the body means the skin becomes flabbier and loses elasticity. This happens because the structure formation can no longer be maintained, and the connective tissue can no longer bind moisture. This favors the development of the first wrinkles. Furthermore, fewer new cells are formed, existing cells shrink, and the upper skin layers become thinner. Thus, the strongest external indicator is a deteriorated skin appearance.

How can collagen supplements reduce the signs of aging?

Scientific studies have shown that supplementing with collagen can reduce the symptoms associated with a lack of collagen, including fine lines and wrinklesCollagen supplementation contributes to skin health by adding moisture, reducing wrinkles, and improving elasticity.

By taking hydrolyzed collagen with a low molecular weight (such as Collamin) the body’s own collagen structures can be restored and supported.

Last but not least, it is worth pointing out that collagen is essential not only for a good skin appearance and firm connective tissue but also for healthy muscle cords, blood vessels, joints, ligaments, and teeth.
